What is GEAR UP?

In the fall of 2014, the University of Alabama at Birmingham was awarded a Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant by the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of GEAR UP Alabama was to increases the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

Supportive services provided by GUA staff and project partners.

Increase students’ knowledge of college/higher education options, preparation, and financing.

Increased percentage of students who enroll in and succeed in college.

First-year college enrollment for GUA cohort students remained steady (45% in 2020, and 46% in 2021), whereas freshman enrollment nationally declined about 6.5% each year since 2019. (Note: Per the original grant proposal, the target number of schools served by GUA was reduced by 25% for FY 2021 and thus the number of students served decreased).
